Boryspil: the ancient site of Letch and the story of Prince Borys
An early reference to the area, not a founding date
Chronicles describing events in 1015 mention the area around present-day Boryspil, historically called Letch or Lto. Prince Borys, a son of Volodymyr the Great, was killed near the Alta River during a dynastic conflict. Historians caution that a reference to the area is not the same thing as a documented founding date for the present-day town.
Volodymyr Monomakh’s church
Prince Volodymyr Monomakh built a church dedicated to Borys and Hlib at the site associated with Borys’s death. It became known as the Letch shrine. The area also functioned as a fortified stopping point for princely parties and messengers moving between the Kyiv and Pereiaslav lands.
When the name Boryspil appears
The first known documentary reference to a settlement called Boryspil dates to 1590. Its name is traditionally connected with the phrase “Borys’s field”, preserving the memory of the medieval prince. The name links a modern city with a story from the early history of Kyivan Rus.
A town with its own administration
Seventeenth-century documents describe Boryspil as a small town with local administrative institutions. Its political and administrative status changed over time, but it remained a centre for the surrounding area. The city’s past goes well beyond its modern association with an airport; its roots lie in medieval chronicles and the land around the Alta.
