Local history and heritage
Brusyliv: a small town with centuries of history
A town linked to medieval Zdvyzhensk
Historians connect Brusyliv with Zdvyzhensk, a settlement mentioned in the Hypatian Chronicle in 1097 and 1150. Today Brusyliv stands beside the Zdvyzh River. Earthworks in the town centre are reminders of an earlier fortified settlement.
From a recorded name to town rights
The name Brusyliv appears in records from 1543. In 1585, the town received Magdeburg rights. During the Cossack period, it also served as a company town in the Pavoloch regiment.
The church and Capuchin heritage
An eighteenth-century church complex tells another part of the story. A church was built in 1787 and had an associated school; a Capuchin monastery followed. Remains of the complex survive among the town’s historic sites.
The birthplace of Ivan Ohiienko
Ivan Ohiienko was born in Brusyliv. He became a linguist, educator, public figure and later Metropolitan Ilarion. Local researchers have documented buildings associated with his life, and the town has a museum dedicated to its history and his work.
