Cherkasy: a city shaped by the Dnipro

Cherkasy sits on the right bank of the Kremenchuk Reservoir, a broad stretch of the Dnipro River. The river has long connected settlements and trading routes, while the city developed as a fortified centre.

Its Cossack-era past is documented in regional archives. The Cherkasy Regional Museum of Local History explores the area’s archaeology, culture and changing life through the centuries.

Cherkasy: a fortress town and its local history

Dnipro River

A city overlooking the reservoir

Cherkasy lies beside the Kremenchuk Reservoir on the Dnipro. For centuries the river provided a route for trade and travel. Its wide waterfront is now one of the most distinctive features of the city’s landscape.

Cossack era

From fortifications to a river town

Regional archive materials describe a wooden castle built in medieval Cherkasy. During the fifteenth to seventeenth centuries, the surrounding area became closely associated with the rise of Cossack settlements along the Dnipro.

1918

A museum founded by local teachers

In May 1918, local educators and the Prosvita society established a historical and educational museum named after Taras Shevchenko. That initiative developed into today’s Cherkasy Regional Museum of Local History.

1954

Cherkasy became a regional capital

Cherkasy became the administrative centre of the newly established Cherkasy region in 1954. Education, culture and industry expanded as the city grew.

Early 20th century

The Shcherbyna mansion

The former mansion of engineer Afanasii Shcherbyna on Khreshchatyk Street is known for its ornate façades. The historic house later became the city’s wedding palace.

1989

A museum devoted to one book

The Kobzar Museum opened in the former Tsybulsky merchants’ house. It explores editions of Taras Shevchenko’s famous book in a building where the poet once stayed.
