Chernihiv: a city of medieval cathedrals

Chernihiv preserves some of Ukraine’s most remarkable medieval churches. The historic fortified centre, known as the Dytynets or Val, includes the Transfiguration Cathedral and the Cathedral of Saints Boris and Hlib.

Beyond the old citadel, the Boldyni Hills and Anthony Caves tell a different part of the city’s story, rooted in early monastic life.

Chernihiv: the city’s medieval heritage

The Dytynets

An ancient fortified centre

The area known as Val was once the fortified heart of Chernihiv. It now brings together landmarks from different periods, including the Transfiguration Cathedral, the Boris and Hlib Cathedral and later historic buildings.

11th-12th centuries

Two remarkable early cathedrals

The Transfiguration Cathedral dates to the eleventh century and is among Ukraine’s oldest surviving stone churches. The Boris and Hlib Cathedral was built in the twelfth century. Both reflect the architectural history of medieval Chernihiv.

Boldyni Hills

Caves and monastic traditions

The Anthony Caves are associated with Chernihiv’s early monastic community. Together with the wider Trinity-Illinsky monastery complex, they reveal a chapter of the city’s history beyond the old citadel.

1623

A new chapter in city government

Chernihiv was gradually rebuilt after early 17th-century destruction. In 1623, the city received Magdeburg rights, reshaping its municipal administration.

12th-13th centuries

St Paraskeva Church by the old market

St Paraskeva Church was built in the trading quarter around the turn of the 13th century. It recalls the markets and crafts of medieval Chernihiv.

1696

The Trinity Cathedral

Completed in 1696 with funding from Hetman Ivan Mazepa, Trinity Cathedral combines Ukrainian Baroque traditions with other architectural influences.
