Local history and heritage
Cherniakhiv: stories of a small Polissian town
The first known written record
A document from 1545 mentions Cherniakhiv as a small town associated with the Nemyrych family. It stands beside the Ocheretianka River. Several explanations for the name circulate, although none can be treated as certain.
A town in the Cossack period
Local historical accounts describe Cherniakhiv as a company town during the Cossack wars. It later served as a volost administrative centre for nearby villages.
Mills, workshops and a post station
As the settlement grew, a cloth factory, a brewery and mills operated locally. A postal station linked the town to the wider region. These businesses formed part of everyday life in nineteenth-century Polissia.
A newspaper telling local stories
Cherniakhiv also has a long press history. The newspaper founded in 1931 as Komunar Cherniakhivshchyny was published under the name Nove Zhyttia from 1962. The Encyclopedia of Modern Ukraine documents its development.
