Dnipro: a city on the river
The city of Dnipro stretches along both banks of the river that gives it its name. Monastyrskyi Island is one of its distinctive landmarks, and the city’s museums document the wider Dnipro region’s past.
The name Dnipro was officially adopted in May 2016, but the river and the surrounding settlements have a much longer history.

Dnipro: a river island, a museum and a new name
An island beside the right bank
A narrow channel separates Monastyrskyi Island from the Dnipro’s right bank. Its western side has granite outcrops, while the eastern end becomes a sandy spit. The Museum of Dnipro History records archaeological finds and the island’s changing names.
A museum of the Dnipro region
The Dmytro Yavornytskyi National Historical Museum was founded in 1849. Its collections include archaeological finds, medieval steppe stone statues and objects documenting the history of the Zaporizhian Sich.
When the city became Dnipro
On 19 May 2016, Ukraine’s parliament officially renamed Dnipropetrovsk as Dnipro. The current name is shared with the major river running through the city, a defining part of its geography.
Fortresses along the Dnipro
Cossack and military forts once stood in and around today’s Dnipro, including Staryi and Novyi Kodak. They tell a story that predates the modern industrial city.
The first permanent bridge
The Amur railway bridge opened across the Dnipro in 1884. Connecting the riverbanks by rail helped the city’s late 19th-century expansion.
Pilots of the Dnipro rapids
River pilots based in Lotsmanska Kamianka guided boats through the Dnipro’s dangerous rapids. Their specialist knowledge supported trade along the river.
