Local history and notable facts

Fastiv: Cossack history, railways and a step towards unity

1390

A trading town on the Unava

Fastiv is documented as early as 1390 and stands on the Unava River, in a region crossed by historic trade routes. It received Magdeburg rights in 1601. Long before it became a major railway junction, the town’s fortunes depended on local commerce, crafts and its connections with surrounding settlements.

Late 17th century

Semen Palii and the Cossack regiment

Fastiv became a centre of Cossack activity on the Right Bank of Ukraine. A local regiment was associated with Colonel Semen Palii and took part in the political and military struggles of the period. This chapter of the city’s past is less visible today than its railways, but it played an important role in the history of the region.

19th century

The railway changes Fastiv

Railways reshaped Fastiv into an important transport hub. Tracks brought trade, employment and new connections across the region. The station later acquired national historical significance as the setting for negotiations between two Ukrainian republics. In Fastiv, the story of the railways is also part of the story of statehood.

1 December 1918

An agreement signed in a railway carriage

Representatives of the Ukrainian People’s Republic and the West Ukrainian People’s Republic signed a preliminary agreement to unite in Fastiv. It helped pave the way for the Act of Unification announced on 22 January 1919. A railway-carriage museum at the station commemorates the event, one of the best-known moments in the city’s history.
