Six chapters of Kharkiv history
The early fortress
Mid-seventeenth-century documents mention Kharkiv’s fortifications. The first fortress stood near the confluence of the Lopan and Kharkiv rivers, with defensive towers protecting the young settlement.
A new university
Kharkiv University opened in 1805, following the efforts of Vasyl Karazin. The institution helped establish scientific societies and shape the city’s cultural life.
Freedom Square
The large urban ensemble now known as Freedom Square took shape in the 1920s. Its scale and layout reflect the planning ideas of that period.
The Derzhprom building
Built during the age of Constructivism, Derzhprom has become a distinctive landmark on Freedom Square. Its connected blocks are a notable example of twentieth-century architecture.
The Taras Shevchenko monument
A monument to Ukrainian poet and artist Taras Shevchenko was unveiled in 1935. It remains part of Kharkiv’s historic central landscape.
The first metro line
Kharkiv opened its first metro line in 1975. The system became an important part of the city’s transport history and the development of its residential districts.
