Six chapters from the history of Kropyvnytskyi

1754

St Elizabeth Fortress earthworks

The 18th-century fortress survives in the form of earthen ramparts. Its star-shaped fortifications and bastions offer a glimpse of the area before the modern city took shape.

1882

The theatre of the Coryphaei

Kropyvnytskyi played a central role in the rise of professional Ukrainian theatre. Marko Kropyvnytskyi, Mariia Zankovetska and other performers helped build the tradition on the city’s stage.

1982

The Marko Kropyvnytskyi Museum

A memorial museum occupies the former home of the actor and playwright. Photographs, playbills, documents and personal belongings trace the history of Ukrainian theatre.

1889

The Great Choral Synagogue

This late-19th-century building combines eclectic and Moorish architectural details. It reflects the city’s diverse past and also hosts a museum devoted to local Jewish history.

Late 19th century

The Shpolianskyi House

A former merchant’s house now accommodates the city’s Art Museum. Its architecture and collections offer a view of Kropyvnytskyi’s artistic heritage.

1995

The Karpenko-Karyi Museum

The museum occupies a house associated with eleven years of playwright Ivan Karpenko-Karyi’s life. Its exhibits tell the story of his work and the Tobylevych family.
