Lutsk: a medieval castle and an old riverside town
Lutsk developed beside the Styr River. Its best-known landmark, Lubart’s Castle, retains three towers and substantial brick walls. Close by are the surviving remains of the former Lower Castle and the streets of the historic town.

Lutsk: castles, princes and underground passages
Lubart’s Castle
Stone fortifications were developed under Prince Lubart. Three towers remain: the Entrance, Styr and Bishop’s towers. Together with the brick walls, they form the city’s most recognisable landmark.
A gathering of European rulers
Under Grand Duke Vytautas, Lutsk became an important political centre. In 1429 it hosted a congress of European rulers and envoys to discuss major political and security questions.
The Chortoryiski Tower
One tower survives from the old Lower Castle. It now forms part of the Okolnyi Castle museum, which also includes restored underground galleries and sections of the historic defensive complex.
The Kosach family house
The Kosach family, including Lesia Ukrainka’s father, lived in this building near the cathedral. It now houses a small exhibition about the writer.
Beneath St Peter and Paul Cathedral
Two levels of underground rooms lie beneath the cathedral. The spaces were used for burials and other purposes linked to the former monastic complex.
Bells, books and historic armour
Lutsk Castle houses small museums devoted to bells, books, arms and art. Together, they reveal different aspects of the town’s past.
