Lviv: the story behind its historic streets
A centre built around trade
The central streets and squares took shape from the fourteenth century. Buildings across the old town reflect the merchants, craftspeople and different communities who lived and worked here.
A town below the hill
High Castle and Pidzamche are among Lviv’s oldest areas. The landscape still shows the relationship between the former fortified hill and the streets that developed beneath it.
Recognised by UNESCO
UNESCO listed Lviv’s historic centre for its surviving urban fabric and mixture of architectural traditions. The protected site also encompasses the ensemble of St George’s Cathedral.
The Armenian Cathedral quarter
The Armenian Cathedral, bell tower and related historic buildings form a distinctive ensemble, reflecting the long history of Lviv’s Armenian community.
St George’s Cathedral
St George’s Baroque Cathedral was built in the 18th century. Its hilltop ensemble forms a distinct part of Lviv’s UNESCO-listed historic centre.
Lviv Opera opens
The opera house designed by Zygmunt Gorgolewski opened on 4 October 1900. Its grand façade remains a landmark on Svobody Avenue.
