Odesa: six places with a story
The UNESCO-listed old centre
UNESCO inscribed Odesa’s historic centre on the World Heritage List in 2023. The area reflects the growth of the Black Sea port and the architectural traditions of its diverse communities.
The seaside steps
The staircase, often called the Potemkin Stairs, was designed by Francesco Boffo to connect the boulevard and waterfront. It now has 192 steps, with a famous optical effect created by its changing width.
Prymorskyi Boulevard
This short promenade above the harbour is lined with historic buildings on one side and slopes towards the port on the other. Several major landmarks stand along its route.
Vorontsov Palace
Built to a design by Francesco Boffo for Mikhail Vorontsov, the palace later served several different purposes. Its history also includes a substantial private library.
The Odesa Passage
A covered shopping gallery was built at the corner of Preobrazhenska and Derybasivska streets. Sculptures, arches and ornate details decorate its interior.
Odesa Opera House
The opera and ballet theatre is among the best-known architectural landmarks in the old city. Its presence reflects Odesa’s long theatrical tradition.
