Poltava: Round Square, Kotliarevskyi and the White Rotunda
Poltava brings together several periods of city history. Its Round Square is surrounded by nineteenth-century civic architecture, Ivan Kotliarevskyi’s former home is now a museum, and the White Rotunda overlooks the Vorskla valley. Together they tell a more personal story of the city.

Poltava: three places that explain the city
The Round Square
After Poltava became a provincial capital in 1802, a new administrative square was planned. Classical-style civic buildings were arranged around it, with a green space at the centre.
Ivan Kotliarevskyi’s home
The writer Ivan Kotliarevskyi was born and lived in Poltava. His museum-estate opened in 1969, on the 200th anniversary of his birth. The reconstruction drew in part on a watercolour by Taras Shevchenko.
The White Rotunda
The original pavilion on Ivan Hill was built in 1909. It was destroyed during the Second World War and rebuilt in 1954. The familiar white colonnade looks out over the Vorskla River valley.
Exaltation of the Cross Monastery
Founded in 1650, the Exaltation of the Cross Monastery is one of Poltava’s historic landmarks. Its seven-domed cathedral stands on Monastery Hill.
The Battle of Poltava Museum
Opened in 1909, the museum examines the battle of 1709 through historical documents, weapons and objects from the early 18th century.
Volodymyr Korolenko’s house
A literary museum was established in the house where Korolenko spent the last 18 years of his life. Its first exhibition opened in 1928.
