Six chapters from the history of Ternopil
The town’s founding charter
In 1540 Jan Tarnowski received a royal charter to establish a fortified settlement. This document is commonly used as the starting point for Ternopil’s recorded urban history.
The Old Castle
The castle was built as a defensive residence. It has been altered several times, but the building beside the lake remains one of Ternopil’s oldest landmarks.
Ternopil Lake
Permission to create a reservoir on the Seret was granted in 1548. The water served practical and defensive purposes before becoming a defining feature of the city landscape.
The church by the lake
The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross stands near the water. It is among Ternopil’s earliest churches and was connected with the town’s old defensive system.
The Nativity Church
The stone Church of the Nativity was built in the early 17th century. Its history is linked to local religious brotherhoods and the spiritual life of the town.
The former Dominican church
The Baroque church and monastery were built in the second half of the 18th century. The church is now the Archcathedral of the Immaculate Conception.
