Uzhhorod: a castle, local traditions and the river
Uzhhorod Castle
The fortress underwent several major rebuilding projects. Today it houses the Zakarpattia Regional Museum of Local History. The Uzhhorod Union, an important event in the region’s religious history, took place on the castle grounds in 1646.
Houses from across Zakarpattia
The Museum of Folk Architecture and Rural Life brings together traditional homes, farm buildings and community structures from different parts of the region, showing how its communities lived.
The riverside linden avenue
Czech botanists planted the avenue in 1928. It extends for about 2.2 kilometres along the right bank of the Uzh and remains a familiar part of the city’s riverside walks.
Korzo in the old centre
Pedestrian Korzo is one of Uzhhorod’s oldest streets. Small courtyards lie behind the façades, while the street remains a meeting place for local residents.
A bridge over the Uzh
An iron bridge was built over the Uzh in 1898, replacing earlier wooden crossings. The pedestrian bridge remains one of the city’s best-known landmarks.
The first miniature sculpture
In 2010, artist Mykhailo Kolodko placed a tiny St Nicholas figure on Theatre Square. It began a citywide trail of miniature sculptures.
