Local history and notable facts

Bila Tserkva: from medieval Yuriv to Oleksandriia Park

1032

The town began as Yuriv

Yaroslav the Wise founded the fortified town of Yuriv on the Ros River. Its name referred to Saint George, the prince’s Christian namesake. Yuriv guarded the southern approaches to Kyiv and became an important administrative and religious centre. The story of present-day Bila Tserkva therefore begins centuries before the name we use today.

1552

A fortress and a renewed settlement

Written records of the town became scarce after the Mongol invasion. In the sixteenth century, Kyiv voivode Semen Pronsky built a castle here, and a settlement grew around it under the name Bila Tserkva. The fortress would go on to feature in many of the region’s conflicts, making the city strategically important.

1651

A Cossack stronghold

During Bohdan Khmelnytsky’s uprising, Bila Tserkva was a Cossack regimental town. The Bila Tserkva Treaty was concluded here in 1651 following military campaigns in the area. The city’s position on the Right Bank of Ukraine meant that control of its fortifications mattered to successive armies and rulers.

Late 18th century

The making of Oleksandriia Park

After the Branicki family acquired Bila Tserkva, they began developing a landscaped estate park nearby. Named for Countess Aleksandra Branicka, Oleksandriia brought together groves, ponds, bridges and carefully planned paths. It survives as one of the city’s best-known historic landmarks and a reminder of its eighteenth-century past.
