Local history and notable facts
Brovary: a Cossack town on the roads to Kyiv
The first written records
Brovary developed where routes from the east and northeast converged on Kyiv. The city council dates the first documentary reference to 1628, while some historical studies cite records from 1630. One explanation connects the name with local breweries, though this remains a theory rather than an established fact.
A local Cossack company
A Cossack company was formed in Brovary during the upheavals of the mid-seventeenth century, led by Fedir Vedmid. It joined the Kyiv company in 1649. Cossacks, farmers and craftspeople lived here, while markets and fairs drew visitors. These everyday activities were as much a part of Brovary’s history as major political events.
Taras Shevchenko passes through
Taras Shevchenko travelled through Brovary on several occasions. In May 1861, the procession carrying his remains for reburial in Kaniv passed through the town. This journey links Brovary with the memory of one of Ukraine’s most important poets.
The railway and a growing town
The Kyiv–Kursk railway reached the area in 1868, bringing a station and new opportunities for trade and skilled work. Workshops, businesses and public institutions developed over the following decades. Brovary gradually grew from a small settlement on a well-travelled route into a substantial city beside Kyiv.
