Local history

Six chapters from the history of Kamianets-Podilskyi

14th-17th centuries

The Old and New Fortresses

The fortifications at the entrance to the old town were expanded repeatedly. Towers, walls and bastions show why Kamianets remained an important defensive centre of Podillia.

Medieval origins

The Castle Bridge

This bridge crosses the deep gorge between the old town and the fortress. Rebuilt across different eras, it is also known as the Turkish Bridge because of its Ottoman-period history.

River landscape

The Smotrych Canyon

A deep loop of the Smotrych surrounds the historic centre. Its rocky slopes offered natural protection and helped determine the town’s distinctive shape.

15th-16th centuries

The Town Hall and civic life

The old Town Hall stands on the Polish Market Square. The city’s heritage also reflects separate traditions of local government, including the Ruthenian magistracy.

15th-16th centuries

The Ruthenian and Polish Gates

These gateways formed part of defensive systems that combined towers with control of river water. Their surviving structures help explain how the old town was protected.

17th century

A cathedral beside a minaret

The Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul stands next to a minaret built during Ottoman rule. The unusual combination preserves evidence of the town’s changing cultural history.
