Old records refer to today’s Khmelnytskyi as Ploskyriv and later Proskuriv. Its changing streets, churches and buildings reflect several centuries of local history, which is also documented by the city history museum.

Six milestones in Khmelnytskyi history
The first written record
A document dated 10 February 1431 mentions a settlement called Ploskyrivtsi. This is the starting point for the city’s documented history.
The name Proskuriv
At the end of the eighteenth century, the town became an administrative district centre. The name Proskuriv appeared in official records and remained in use until the mid-twentieth century.
A plan for the central streets
After a major fire in the early nineteenth century, a new town plan was approved. Many streets in the historic centre followed its layout.
The Nativity of the Virgin Cathedral
A new cathedral was built on the site of an earlier church. According to the city council, it is the oldest surviving building in Khmelnytskyi.
The railway arrives
The railway line through Proskuriv encouraged trade and industrial growth. Various factories were established in the town by the end of the nineteenth century.
The city becomes Khmelnytskyi
In January 1954, Proskuriv was renamed Khmelnytskyi, and the region was renamed too. The city history museum now helps document its earlier names and everyday life.
