Local history and heritage
Korostyshiv: a town shaped by the Teteriv and granite
An old settlement under Lithuanian rule
Korostyshiv appears in records from the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. In 1499, Grand Duke Alexander granted the settlement to Krzysztof-Aleksander Kmita. The Olizar family later owned the town for several generations.
A chapter of Cossack history
During the Khmelnytsky uprising, Korostyshiv became a company town of the Bila Tserkva regiment. It was also caught in the conflicts of the period: Stefan Czarniecki’s troops destroyed the town in 1653.
Markets and municipal rights
Trade mattered here long before the industrial era. Eight annual fairs were held from 1777, and the town received Magdeburg rights in 1779.
Granite becomes part of the town’s identity
Local granite deposits began to be quarried in the nineteenth century. Paper and match factories also operated here. Stone cutting eventually became one of Korostyshiv’s defining trades, alongside the rocky landscape of the Teteriv River valley.
