Local history and heritage
Ovruch: medieval princes, an old church and Polissia stone
A town in the medieval chronicles
Recorded as Vruchyi in 977, Ovruch was an important settlement in the lands of the Drevlyans. Its early history is linked to Prince Oleh Sviatoslavych.
St Basil’s Church
Prince Rurik Rostyslavych commissioned a stone church dedicated to St Basil. Despite destruction and later rebuilding, the church remains an important monument of medieval Rus architecture.
The region’s pink slate
Pyrophyllite slate, often called pink slate, was quarried near Ovruch. Craftspeople used it for building slabs, spindle whorls and religious objects that travelled far beyond the region.
Magdeburg rights
Ovruch received Magdeburg rights in the seventeenth century. Its history still brings together medieval princely traditions, the Cossack era and the crafts of old Polissia.
