Local history and heritage
Lypky: a village with a castle-like watermill
An early record of the village
A local heritage account dates the first written mention of Lypky to 1618. In the nineteenth century it belonged to the Kornyn administrative district of Skvyra county. Archival catalogues also list church records associated with Lypky, including documents from 1811 and 1822.
The families who owned the estate
Accounts of the village describe successive estate owners, including the Jablonowski, Radziwill and Podhorski families. The Podhorskis acquired the property in the mid-nineteenth century and left an architectural legacy.
A watermill that resembles a Gothic castle
Built in the late nineteenth century, the red-brick mill has towers and pointed openings that make it look more like a small fortress than a workplace. Local heritage researchers associate the project with the Podhorski estate.
The school and estate gate
An old school building in the Art Nouveau style survives in Lypky, as do the estate entrance and sections of brick wall. Together with the mill, they make the village’s past unusually visible.
