Popilnia: a settlement and a village
Zhytomyr district has two separate places named Popilnia: a settlement and a village. The settlement grew around a railway station opened in 1870, while the neighbouring village has a much longer history.

The history of Popilnia: an old village and a railway settlement
The village came first
Popilnia village predates the railway settlement that shares its name. The Encyclopedia of Modern Ukraine dates the village to the early seventeenth century. The name is associated with the historic production of potash from wood ash; the places where ash was stored and processed were known locally as popilni.
A railway station creates a new settlement
Construction of the Fastiv to Koziatyn line began in the 1860s. Popilnia station opened in 1870, around two kilometres from the existing village. A separate settlement grew around the station. This explains why Popilnia village and Popilnia settlement must still be distinguished when specifying an address.
Two places sharing one name
At the start of the twentieth century the older village had a church, a school and windmills. The station community was much smaller but grew as transport improved. A branch railway to Skvyra followed in 1910, along with a starch factory.
From district centre to community hub
Popilnia became the centre of a newly formed district in 1923. That district was incorporated into the larger Zhytomyr district during the 2020 administrative reform. Today the settlement is the centre of the surrounding territorial community.
