Local history and heritage
Parypsy: village life and a history reaching back to 1683
The earliest written reference
Parypsy appears in surviving records dating to 1683. Its early history is tied to the lands around the former town of Pavoloch. Several folk explanations exist for the name Parypsy, but their origins remain uncertain.
A church and a village school
Published historical records mention a wooden Church of St Stephen built in 1849 on the site of an older church. By 1860 the village also had a school with around twenty pupils.
A settlement beside the Kamianka River
A Ukrainian local history reference work published in 1973 places Parypsy on the Kamianka River, a tributary of the Ros. It describes a school, library, community centre and medical facilities as they existed at the time, not as a current facilities directory.
Keeping Cossack traditions in local memory
A Zhytomyr news report documented a village celebration in 2012 featuring Cossack-themed activities. Such events show how the history of Parypsy continues to be remembered by residents.
