Novoselytsia: a village beside the Novosilka River
A name suggesting a new settlement
The traditional founding date of Novoselytsia is 1720. Its name reflects the fact that it emerged later than some neighbouring villages. The village lies near the upper reaches of the small Novosilka River, close to the border between Zhytomyr and Kyiv regions.
Churches and village life
A wooden Church of St Michael the Archangel was built in 1750, followed by a new church in 1859. Nineteenth-century Novoselytsia also had a Catholic church, a school and mills. It was an established centre of religious and everyday life for the surrounding countryside.
A former local administrative centre
Novoselytsia was once the centre of a volost, a historical administrative district that included nearby villages such as Savertsi and Pochuiky. Records from 1886 list 146 households and 933 residents in Novoselytsia itself.
Remembering difficult times
The village suffered during the Holodomor and periods of political repression. Historical records have helped researchers identify many victims by name. Novoselytsia now belongs to the Popilnia territorial community.
