Pavoloch: from a Cossack town to a village
A settlement with centuries of history
The earliest known written reference to Pavoloch dates to 1503. The village stands where the Pavolochka River joins the Rostavytsia. Archaeological sites nearby span several prehistoric and later periods. Although Pavoloch is a village today, it once held the status of a town.
Town rights and defences
Pavoloch received Magdeburg rights in 1589. Rivers protected three sides of the settlement, while a rampart, palisade and ditch guarded the fourth. According to the Encyclopedia of Modern Ukraine, traces of those old defences could still be found in the nineteenth century.
A Cossack regimental centre
During the uprising led by Bohdan Khmelnytsky, Pavoloch became the centre of its own Cossack regiment. The regiment included companies from nearby towns at different times. Khmelnytsky visited Pavoloch repeatedly, and some of his surviving documents were signed here.
From market town to village
Pavoloch remained a local centre for trade and crafts through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, home to Ukrainian and Jewish communities. Twentieth-century upheavals changed the town profoundly. Historical studies and memorials help preserve the story of its Cossack past.
