Sokoliv Brid: ancient settlements and the tragedy of 1943
Archaeology beside the Rostavytsia
Archaeologists have studied settlements around Sokoliv Brid and neighbouring Pavoloch dating from the Palaeolithic through later prehistoric periods. The Encyclopedia of Modern Ukraine identifies 24 settlement sites and a Palaeolithic camp in the Sokoliv Brid area.
A nineteenth-century village account
In his survey of Kyiv Governorate, historian Lavrentii Pokhylevych described Sokoliv Brid beside the Rostavytsia River, close to Pavoloch. His account recorded the people, land and parish arrangements of the period.
Its own village council
Sokoliv Brid had a separate village council between 1925 and 1954. At other times the village was administered together with nearby Pavoloch.
A tragedy under Nazi occupation
A punitive action devastated Sokoliv Brid in December 1943. According to the Encyclopedia of Modern Ukraine, 450 villagers were burned alive. Remembering these victims is an essential part of the village’s history.
