Boiarka: from Budaivka to a railway and summer town
Budaivka came before modern Boiarka
Part of present-day Boiarka grew from the village of Horodyshche-Budaivka, documented from the early sixteenth century. Archaeological finds point to settlement here much earlier. Budaivka later became one part of the modern city, but its name still helps explain the history of the older neighbourhoods.
A railway station changes the area
The construction of the Kyiv–Fastiv railway brought a station named Boiarka near Budaivka. A separate community gradually developed around the tracks. Easier access from Kyiv encouraged trade and work, and later helped a neighbourhood of summer homes grow beside the railway.
A summer retreat in the woods
By the 1880s, Boiarka was known as a place for seasonal stays and recuperation. Visitors from Kyiv rented or built summer houses, and sanatoriums followed. The woodland setting and convenient rail connection turned the area into a popular retreat from the capital.
Two settlements become a city
Boiarka gained city status when the settlement of Boiarka and the village of Budaivka were brought together. Nearby settlements were added later. That history explains why the modern city has neighbourhoods with different layouts and identities rather than one single historic centre.
