Local history

Obukhiv: from Lukavytsia to the hometown of a poet

1362

The earlier settlement of Lukavytsia

Obukhiv’s early history is linked to the settlement of Lukavytsia, which local historical records date to 1362. The area experienced changing rulers and several place names over the centuries. To follow the town’s earliest story, researchers therefore look beyond the name Obukhiv itself.

16th century

Where the town’s name came from

A local historical account connects the name Obukhiv with a peasant named Obukh who lived in the area. According to this explanation, his name eventually became attached to the settlement during the sixteenth century. It is a reminder that the names of sizeable modern towns can preserve memories of much smaller communities.

14 November 1912

The birthplace of Andrii Malyshko

Ukrainian poet Andrii Malyshko was born in Obukhiv to a large family headed by a shoemaker. He attended the local school and later wrote the lyrics to the beloved Song About the Embroidered Towel. The town commemorates him with a monument, connecting Obukhiv’s history to Ukrainian poetry and song.

1979

A growing industrial town

Obukhiv received city status in 1979. During the twentieth century, new industries, neighbourhoods and public facilities developed alongside the older settlement. Its story now encompasses the early community of Lukavytsia, the legacy of local writers and the growth of a significant town in Kyiv Oblast.
