Pereiaslav: a princely capital, a Cossack town and its museums
A fortified town at the meeting of two rivers
The name Pereiaslavl appears in the text of Prince Oleh’s treaty with Byzantium, dated to 907. In 993, Prince Volodymyr fortified the settlement to protect the south-eastern approaches to Kyiv. The medieval town stood near the confluence of the Alta and Trubizh rivers, with a fortified citadel and adjoining craft quarters.
The centre of a principality
Following the death of Yaroslav the Wise, Pereiaslav became the seat of a principality ruled by his son Vsevolod. Churches, workshops and trading areas shaped everyday life. Archaeologists have uncovered sections of defensive earthworks and the foundations of stone buildings, offering a rare glimpse into the city nearly a thousand years ago.
Town rights and the Cossack era
Pereiaslav received Magdeburg rights in 1585 and later served as the centre of a Cossack regiment. Important negotiations took place here, including the Pereiaslav Council of 1654. Its political consequences shaped relations between the Hetmanate and Muscovy. The episode remains an important and debated part of Ukrainian history.
Preserving the everyday past
The Pereiaslav historical and ethnographic reserve was established in 1979. Its open-air museum of vernacular architecture contains houses, churches and farm buildings brought from communities across the Middle Dnipro region. These exhibits preserve the ordinary lives of earlier generations alongside the city’s well-known princely and Cossack history.
