Vyshhorod: a princely residence above the Dnipro
A town associated with Princess Olha
Vyshhorod first appears in the Primary Chronicle under the year 946. Standing on high ground above the right bank of the Dnipro, it served as a princely residence close to Kyiv. Its position made it a valuable fortified outpost protecting the northern approaches to the Rus capital.
Borys, Hlib and a major shrine
Princes Borys and Hlib were buried in Vyshhorod and later recognised as saints. A great cathedral was built in their honour, making the town a centre of religious importance as well as princely politics. The remains of its medieval settlement still form a significant part of the city’s heritage.
The decline of the medieval centre
The Mongol invasion brought an end to Vyshhorod’s earlier prominence. The once-important fortified town gradually became a much smaller settlement. Later records tell a different story, one centred on the lives of communities living beside the river rather than on the courts of princes.
The hydropower project and a growing town
The construction of the Kyiv Hydroelectric Power Plant reshaped Vyshhorod in the twentieth century. A navigation lock opened in 1964 and the plant began generating electricity later that year. Housing and local infrastructure expanded as the engineering project brought new workers and activity to the area.
