Local history and heritage
Berdychiv: a fortress, trade fairs and a literary connection
The earliest records
The first known references to Berdychiv date to the fourteenth century. Situated on the Hnylopiat River, the town has a history shaped by fortifications, merchants and several cultural communities.
The Discalced Carmelite monastery
In 1630, Janusz Tyszkiewicz gave the local castle to the Discalced Carmelite order. The monastery that developed here remains one of Berdychiv’s best-known historic landmarks.
A busy market town
Berdychiv became known for its major trade fairs. A printing press opened at the monastery in 1758, while the town’s Jewish community and Hasidic traditions were central to its cultural life.
Honoré de Balzac’s wedding
The French novelist Honoré de Balzac married Ewelina Hańska at St Barbara’s Church in Berdychiv on 14 March 1850. The event gives the town a distinctive place in European literary history.
