Korosten: the old city of Iskorosten and its Drevlyan heritage
Early fortified settlements
Archaeologists have studied a group of early hillforts within modern Korosten. They are associated with Iskorosten, the town described in medieval chronicles as a centre of the Drevlyan lands.
A town recorded in the chronicles
The Primary Chronicle mentions Iskorosten in the account of the Drevlyans’ dispute with Prince Ihor over tribute. The story of Princess Olha’s revenge is famous, although some dramatic details belong to the chronicle tradition.
The railway era
Trains began running through the area on the Kyiv to Kovel railway line in the early twentieth century. Further railway development turned Korosten into an important transport junction in Polissia.
A monument to potato pancakes
A monument to the local potato pancake, known as a derun, was unveiled in Drevlianskyi Park. It celebrates the city’s food tradition and the festival that helped make the dish a local symbol.
The Skelia underground complex
A secret military command post was built inside the granite rock above the Uzh River. Part of the structure later became a museum of military fortifications.
The Malusha and Volodymyr monument
A monument to Princess Malusha and her son Volodymyr was unveiled in Drevliansky Park, linking the town’s public spaces with figures known from early chronicles.
