Local history and heritage
Zviahel: a medieval town, Lesia Ukrainka and a restored name
The medieval town of Vozviahl
A settlement called Vozviahl appears in the Galician-Volhynian Chronicle under the year 1257. Archaeological remains of this medieval town have been studied near present-day Zviahel on the Sluch River.
The birthplace of Lesia Ukrainka
The Ukrainian poet Lesia Ukrainka was born here. Her family, the Kosaches, lived in the town during the nineteenth century. Today, Zviahel has museums dedicated to the poet and her family.
The name Novohrad-Volynskyi
For more than two centuries the town was officially known as Novohrad-Volynskyi. The older name, Zviahel, remained familiar locally and in accounts of the town’s early history.
The historical name returns
Ukraine’s parliament voted to restore the name Zviahel. The decision formally reconnected the city’s current name with its medieval past.
