Zhytomyr: from an early hillfort to a regional capital
A story behind the city’s name
Local tradition links Zhytomyr’s name to a warrior called Zhytomyr. The year 884 is often given as the founding date, but the story was recorded much later and should be understood as a legend rather than a firmly established date.
An early settlement between two rivers
The city stands near the Teteriv and Kamianka rivers. Archaeological finds include the remains of a medieval Rus hillfort, as well as evidence of much earlier settlement in the surrounding area.
A fortified town with trading rights
Zhytomyr received Magdeburg rights in the fifteenth century. Its castle became an important part of the town, which developed as a centre of trade and local administration.
A chapter in Ukraine’s statehood
For several weeks in 1918, during the Ukrainian Revolution, the government of the Ukrainian People’s Republic worked in Zhytomyr. The city council includes this episode in its account of local history.
St Sophia Cathedral
The Roman Catholic Cathedral of St Sophia and its bell tower on Castle Square are registered architectural monuments, forming an important part of Zhytomyr’s historic centre.
The Korolev Space Museum
A memorial museum opened in a house associated with the childhood of Sergei Korolev. A separate Space exhibition later brought together spacecraft technology and materials on space exploration.
